Concert Preview: Pigeons Playing Ping Pong - Zydeco - Birmingham - Saturday, April 11th
-
This Saturday night, Pigeons Playing Ping Pong will make their highly anticipated return to Birmingham's Zydeco. Fresh off a run which sent the band down the East Coast to AURA Music Festival and out west for nine Colorado shows, the Pigeons return to the Southeast this week, starting on Wednesday in Raleigh, NC, and continuing to Asheville (Thursday), Atlanta (Friday), Birmingham (Saturday) and Greenville, SC (Sunday). Just four months ago, the Pigeons, one of the fastest growing artists on the jam/festival scene, delivered their always contagious, electro-funk show to a packed house at Zydeco. December's show included fan favorites such as "Live It Up," "Fade Fast," "Melting Lights," "Funk E. Zekiel," "F.U.," and even a mash up of Phish's "Down With Disease" and "Run Like An Antelope" ("Down With Antelope") that just about blew the roof off the venue.

The band is already cruising through another huge year, including stops at Strange Creek Campout, Summer Camp Music Festival, All Good Music Festival, and even their own festival, DomeFest. Their recent late night set at AURA Music Festival had all of Suwannee dancing late in to the night and thirsty for more funk. The return to Birmingham is just as exciting for the band, as the buzz and energy in the room last December made for one of the more memorable shows of 2015. We spoke with Greg Ormont (guitar/vocals) this week to find out a little more about the band's return to the Southeast.

"We love the Southeast. The music-goers have great energy down there,
and it's simply beautiful. Everyone is so warm and welcoming, maybe
it's the weather... either way we are beyond stoked to be back for two
weeks this time around."

Supporting the Pigeons on Saturday night in Birmingham is one of our favorite up-and-coming, prog-rock/soul band's, Gravy (New Orleans, LA). Infusing musical aspects from all walks of life, Gravy’s brand of progressive funk rock has garnered a solid fan base, firmly cementing the band as a fixture in the New Orleans music scene. Touring consistently since their inception, Gravy has established itself as one of the Southeast’s rising acts. Gravy has released two albums, 2008’s Said & Done, and their follow up effort, The Hard Way, in 2011. In the studio, Gravy has collaborated with musicians such as Ben Ellman and Corey Henry of Galactic, and the iconic New Orleans drummer, Johnny Vidacovich. The boys from Gravy can also be seen at Soul Kitchen in Mobile, AL on Friday night, supporting our friends from Earphunk.
